Independent, experienced, no vendor agenda

Independent answers on your technology organisation. Before the next big decision.

Clarity Before Commitment

The Technology Assessment is a fixed-fee engagement for CEOs, boards and investors of PE-backed and founder-led growth companies. Structured interviews, evidence-based findings, and a board-ready report on what is working, what is at risk, and what to fix first. Before you commit to the big decisions.

Where I have led technology
SwiftManaged AI EKCO Proactis Rightmove Kudelski Security Netwatch

Built on 25+ years leading technology across FTSE-100, Nasdaq-listed and PE-backed companies, including 20+ acquisition integrations and platforms serving 150M+ users.

It’s rarely the technology

The deeper problem is usually unclear ownership, weak decision authority, poor prioritisation, or a gap between technical activity and business outcomes.

The Technology Assessment gives you independent CTO judgement in a short, structured engagement. I assess what is really happening across technology, product, R&D, AI, data, security and spend, then translate the findings into business language your leadership team and board can act on.

Designed for PE-backed and founder-led growth companies, typically 50 to 500 people, where technology has become a board-level question.

Operator, not auditor. This is written by someone who has owned the P&L consequences of these decisions, not someone working from a template.

Built for a few specific situations

  • Multiple business lines with different technology profiles.
  • Recent or planned acquisitions.
  • A board that needs an independent read before a major technology investment.
  • Exit preparation.

When you need it, what I assess, what you get

The two or three highest-leverage areas get a deep dive; the rest get a clear flag and a recommendation on where to go deeper. You leave with one integrated, board-ready pack and a leadership readout, short, direct, and built to drive decisions.

When you need this

The signals

  • Delivery is slowing and the roadmap feels unclear
  • AI activity is fragmented, but not translating into business value
  • Technology costs are rising without clear impact
  • Confidence in R&D or engineering is uncertain
  • Post-acquisition complexity is showing up across platforms, teams or vendors
  • The board is losing confidence in the technology narrative
  • You need an independent view before decisions on investment, leadership or operating model
What I assess

The scope

The assessment reads the business at two levels. At group level it looks at the shared infrastructure, security, governance and spend every unit depends on. At business-unit level it assesses each line on its own terms, with its own risks and priorities. Both come together into one set of findings a board can act on.

  • Infrastructure and spend
  • Security and compliance
  • Applications and architecture
  • Delivery and governance

Coverage is what makes the findings hold. A recent assessment ran to eighteen stakeholders across fifteen sessions, which is what it takes for patterns to separate from anecdotes and for a finding to survive the meeting where somebody disagrees with it.

What you get

The deliverable

One integrated, board-ready pack, delivered with a leadership readout. Its sections:

  • Board-ready executive summary
  • Technology, product and AI assessment
  • Delivery, engineering and SDLC review
  • Architecture, security and vendor red flags
  • Technology risk register
  • Technology spend and cost optimisation review
  • Priority interventions and a 30/60/90-day action plan

One page. Every decision the board needs to make.

The full pack runs deep; the first page does not. Every assessment opens with a Findings Snapshot: the overall posture verdict, a severity band for each module traced to sourced evidence, and the priority interventions framed the way leadership actually works. Decide, direct, authorise, approve. A 30/60/90-day plan sits alongside, so the readout starts with actions rather than observations.

Busy CEOs and boards get the whole picture in ninety seconds. The evidence behind every band sits in the module reports, risk register and source appendix underneath it.

Behind the snapshot sits the full pack: executive summary, module reports, risk register, cost review and source appendix.

Three phases, end to end

1

Discovery

Stakeholder interviews, document review, architecture walkthrough, vendor and spend analysis, and operating model mapping.

2

Analysis

Pattern analysis, risk assessment, red flag identification, spend benchmarking, and validation of findings.

3

Findings and readout

Board-ready findings pack, prioritised recommendations, 30/60/90-day action plan and leadership readout.

Timeline is agreed with scope and committed in the proposal as a delivery date.

The kind of finding that changes the decision

A short, structured assessment is built to surface the structural issues a busy leadership team rarely has time to name. Two anonymised examples from recent work.

Revenue leak at a seam

Customers were paying for a service that had not been switched on.

Signed orders moved from billing to provisioning through a step nobody owned. An account could sit paid but not live for weeks before anyone noticed, and the customer noticed first. A buyer who pays and then waits is already deciding whether to renew. The fix was not more effort; it was naming who owns the handoff.

Real adoption, no governance

AI was already in production, with no policy underneath it.

Tools were live across marketing and client-facing teams, but there was no acceptable-use policy, no approval step for AI-generated client material, and no view of spend. Genuine adoption sitting on no governance, in a regulated domain where a single fabricated citation is a real liability. The recommendation was a lightweight framework before the risk found a customer.

One fixed fee. Agreed before we start.

The assessment is a fixed-fee engagement, scoped and priced in a single conversation before any work begins. No day rates, no hourly billing, no scope creep. You know the full cost on day one.

Assessment to Execution

The assessment delivers findings, diagnosis and direction in one fixed fee. Execution is always a separate decision, and it is yours to own.

The Assessment: one fixed fee

1

Assessment

What is really happening across your technology organisation.

2

Diagnosis

The root causes beneath the symptoms.

3

Direction

What to fix first, and in what order.

Optional 4

Execution

Separately scoped. Yours to run with your own team, your own partners, or with me.

You leave with a clear view of what is working, what is not, what needs to change and what should happen next.

You can implement the recommendations with your existing team, use them for board discussion, or bring me in to support the next phase. Independent CTO judgement. Board-ready recommendations. No vendor agenda.
